What to bring the first week of school

Often new 6th graders purchase unnecessary items for the first day of class.  In order to help you and your parents better understand what you will need for school, we’ve put a list below.  The items we have  listed, are things we use nearly every day.  Things like markers, crayons, rulers, calculators, etc., we provide in class. However, having them at home for finishing up odds and ends is always handy.

• 

  These folders will be 3-hole punched and put into your trapper the first day of class.

  Colored two-pocket folders WITHOUT the middle brads- We use a color-coded system to help teach organization.  Please have one of each of the following colors: blue, purple, red, orange, green, and yellow.  This is a big part of teaching you how to handle middle school.

• A 3-ringed binder to be used for writing as you Writer’s Notebook (WNB).  It will contain many writing resources that will be used all year.  Nothing else should be in this binder.  This ends up being our Writing Workshop text book all year.  Mrs. Clark supplies the pages:)

• A trapper-keeper (binder) to hold all of the folders and agenda. This is very important in preparing to not use desks for storage. Again, preparing for middle school when there won’t be desks used for you to keep your things in.  By the end of the year, we won’t use them either.
• 

  You will do all your math book homework in here.

  One 1 subject notebook of paper for math. (You will be doing ALL your book assignments in this, so papers don’t get lost.)

• Pencils. (There are limited supplies of these in class that you can purchase with Good As Gold Tickets-but it’s nice to not have to waste them on pencils!)

• One box of Kleenex to donate to the class.  (You won’t believe how much we go through in the course of the year!)

• A water bottle (with water only) and a HEALTHY snack to keep brains sharp and focused.  (We encourage drinking water and eating healthy snacks during class.  Our rule is that it has to be healthy and not distract from your or others learning.)

Open House-6th grade Team Meeting

Come join us in the gym on Wednesday, September 1^st from 6:30-7:30 pm.  We have important handouts and will talk about what to expect this year in 6^th grade.  We hope to have everyone at the meeting-students and parents.   Meet your teachers and check out your room after our team meeting.

What  to expect the first day of  sixth grade

Are you excited?  We sure are!  We’ve been working all summer getting ready for you- preparing our rooms and plans for an exciting 6th grade year.  But, we understand that you may be a bit apprehensive.  So, here’s a few suggestions:

1. Get a good night’s sleep- as best you can:)
2. Bring a backpack with a water bottle, healthy snack, lunch or lunch $, pencils, color-coded folders (you can buy some from us for $2.00 for the 6 pack), trapper keeper, empty 3-ring binder, notes from home to school.
3. When you arrive, come into school, chat a bit with friends- admire tans, new outfits or hair-doos.  Please be in your homeroom by 8:30 a.m..
4. Once you enter, notice your # on the class list.  Find the desk marked with that #.  Put your backpack under the seat (after you get out any notes and a pencil).
5. Work on your “Me” page while your teacher greets each of you.  Feel free to chat with those around you as you fill it out.
6. As always, ask for help whenever you have a question.

There, that’s all.  You’ll be guided step-by-step, so don’t worry.  We’ve been at this a long time and know what you need.
